You’ve probably heard stories about metal roofing, and how it easily beats out conventional roofing material in several ways. This is somewhat true. Aside from benefits like lightweight construction and associated savings on engineering and building the supporting structure, metal roofs still have limitations that you should watch out for.

Corrosion

Almost all metal roofs are covered with water-resistant paint to protect the covering against corrosion and rust pollutants. However, if there is any sort of damage to the protective coating, your roof might be exposed to the risk of rust and corrosion. So, make sure you inspect the coating and there must be no open edge of the metal left exposed.

Noise

Do you like the tapping sound of rain on the roof? Although it may sound romantic and homey for few out there, in the long run, it’s like living inside a hollow drum. And not in a good way. In the case of screws attached through the flat surfaces, rainwater can run down the roof and cause leaks. Hence, washers should be used to seal around screw heads. Similarly, seams on the metal roof shouldn’t have any separation. In case of a gap, the water and wind can seep through the roof which can cause structural damage to your covering. Or in other words – an expensive problem.

Buckling

Almost all metal roofs can undergo an inherent defect termed as oil-canning. It’s a visible waviness in the flat areas of metal roofs. After being over-stressed, your roof can create visible waves and then it won’t be able to hold a flat form. In some cases, oil-canning can be due to improper usage, handling, and storage by installers or it can be due to manufacturing defects.

Scratching

No matter how durable your metal roof is, at one point in its lifecycle, it is subject to scratching or scuffing. Your contractor or roofing installer must handle the coils and panels cautiously to avoid scratching or rubbing. Anyhow, the majority of scratches can be easily fixed with paint or touch-up pens designed to match the color of your roof. But if a scratch goes beyond the core of the steel, you probably need to replace the metal panel or flashing.
