Does Your Home Need Roof Sarking?
August 17, 2022Is it Time to Fix Your Ceilings?
November 11, 2022Roof sarking is a critical part of a properly installed roof system. It provides protection to your underlayment and insulation, so they last longer and perform better. Roof sarking also increases home energy efficiency because it protects the house’s structure from moisture and UV damage.
What is roof sarking?
Roof sarking is a waterproofing and insulating material that’s installed as part of the roof deck. It’s used to keep water off the roof’s decking and prevent leaks in your home. Roof sarking is installed under the shingles, metal, or tiles so that it’s not visible from the outside of your home.
Roof sarking protects the insulation from UV and moisture damage
Roof sarking aims to protect your home from UV and moisture damage. Insulation can also help your home resist UV damage, but it will unfortunately not protect it from moisture damage.
Roof sarking can be made from different materials, such as aluminum or plastic. It’s usually installed after any insulation has been applied to your roof but can also be used as an initial layer when installing new shingles or other products. Please view the image below comparing the two:
Roof sarking must be installed before any other layers are added on top of it because it protects everything else from getting damaged due to exposure to weather conditions like rain or snowfall, which would cause premature degradation if not appropriately protected by a protective barrier.
Roof sarking, ventilation, and insulation
Roof sarking is a thin layer of material that is placed on the roof deck. It’s then placed between the roof deck and insulation to protect it from UV damage, moisture damage, and other elements that could compromise its performance. Roof sarking is designed to work in conjunction with your roof insulation.
Roof sarking can be made from many materials, including aluminum or granulated rubber (GRP). The purpose of using a vapor barrier like this is to keep moisture from penetrating the insulation, which would make it less effective at insulating your home’s interior against temperature fluctuations.
Sarking is your roof’s first line of defense against the elements
Roof sarking is the second line of defense against the elements next to your roofing material. It protects your home from UV and moisture damage, which can cause the components to break down faster than they usually would. Roof sarking also protects against fire damage, water damage, hail damage, and ice damming (ice buildup that causes leaks).
Sarking & Insulation – Can You Have Both?
Answer: Yes.
Sarking is a great way to protect your roof from the elements. It helps insulate against the heat and cold and prevents moisture from entering your attic space. Plus, sarking can be installed on top of existing insulation if needed!
