Can roofing felt get wet?
July 24, 2025Where do roofing materials come from?
Most roofing materials used in Australia are made right here. Tiles usually come from manufacturers in WA, NSW, or VIC. Colorbond steel? That’s Australian-made too — produced by BlueScope Steel in Port Kembla.
Local roofs = local materials
If you’re getting a roof done in Australia, chances are the materials didn’t travel far.
- Tiles
Both terracotta and concrete tiles are mostly made locally. Companies like Monier and Bristile have manufacturing plants around the country, including WA. That means fewer delays and materials built for local weather. - Metal roofing
Colorbond is the big name here — and it’s made by BlueScope Steel in New South Wales. It’s one of the few roofing products that’s actually designed and tested for Aussie conditions (bushfires, coastal air, harsh UV — the lot). - Other materials
Some specialty products like slate or imported shingles might come from overseas, but they’re less common and usually made to order.
Why this matters
Local materials mean better fit, faster supply, and products suited to our climate — not just stuff pulled off a shelf overseas. Plus, if anything goes wrong, you’ve got local warranty support.
