Aussie Roofing Costs
July 22, 2025What roofing material is best for a flat roof in Australia?
Torch-on bitumen is your best bet. It’s tough, waterproof, and built to handle Aussie heat and UV. TPO and PVC are also solid picks for commercial buildings.
Best Roofing Material for Flat Roofs in Australia? Start Here.
If you’re dealing with a flat roof in Australia, material matters — big time. Unlike pitched roofs, flat ones don’t shed water easily. That means poor material choice = water pooling, leaks, and repairs faster than you can say “drip.”
So what’s the go-to?
1. Torch-On Bitumen
This is the MVP for flat roofs in WA. It’s applied in layers using heat (hence “torch-on”), creating a sealed, waterproof membrane that stands up to our intense sun and heavy rains. Long lifespan, low maintenance, and widely trusted by local roofers. It’s not fancy — it just works.
2. TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)
Great for big commercial setups. TPO is UV-resistant, energy-efficient, and chemically welded for durability. It’s cooler (literally) under the sun and stands up well over time.
3. PVC Roofing
Think of it like TPO’s pricier cousin. Excellent fire resistance and equally solid waterproofing — mostly found on larger or high-spec builds.
4. EPDM (Rubber Roofing)
More of a U.S. favorite. It performs well in mild climates, but under harsh Aussie UV? It’ll need extra coating or just might crack under pressure (literally).
Why Torch-On Is the Aussie All-Rounder
- Proven in Perth’s hot summers and sudden downpours
- Better with standing water than tile or metal
- Widely available and used in residential and commercial jobs
- Easy to repair and maintain
If you’re building new or sorting out a leaky flat roof, don’t cut corners. The right material now saves you from headaches later.
